This was my first game of Slammer, set up without a lot of preparation and played solo. The battlefield consisted of 2 sheets of posterboard (one green and one black) set up as a warehouse compound and a park next door. The compound was surrounded on four sides by chain-link fencing and consisted of a small warehouse, an office building, a low tower and various debris (crates, drums, tires, etc.). A gate opened into the park, which was surrounded on three sides with a three inch stone wall. Another gate opened onto a side street. The park held a number of trees and bushes, one large monument and an access structure for a space-raid shelter.

The setting for this is the city of Cerios on the planet Kordova, which is located in the area of space called the Disputed Zone. The Zone is part of a science fiction background I'm working on for my gaming. One of the nations on Kordova is the Provisional Directorate (set up by the Terran Empire before it pulled out) to govern a former penal colony. In theory, the PD government was supposed to pursue of program of reform and education, culminating in self-rule of some kind. After a few decades passed, it began to look like that wasn't going to happen, so a revolutionary group called the Liberation Brotherhood (or "Libbies") has started a campaign to grab power, err ... free the people. Some friendly aliens (the Draconians) have kindly offered them arms and support out of the goodness of their heart-like organs.

The Liberation Brotherhood had 4 teams, organized as a platoon. The Command Team consisted of Sgt. Hawkins and 4 troopers, (all Trained) with light body armor and laser rifles. Attached to this team were Juanita Smith, political liaison (zippgun and light body armor under clothes) and Zharek, the Draconian "advisor" (wearing heavy armor and carrying a blaster). The remaining teams were: 7 members of the Klark Household Guards (mercenaries turned revolutionaries) led by Gareth; "Killer Kong" and 6 other members of the Underlords gang and "Specs" leading 5 members of the King Snakes. These had no armor and were armed with laser rifles; one member of Klark's Guard had a machine gun. The Command Team was rated as Trained, the rest were either Green or Untrained.

The Command Team was there to escort the politico and the Draconian advisor. Weapons were being handed out by Zharek in the warehouse, while Smith made speeches and gave instructions in the park. The gangers and guards were there to be armed and inspired to fight against the PeeDees. All of them except for the King Snakes (who were getting armed in the Warehouse) started out in the park.

Provisional Directorate security troops had been tipped off about the meeting. Two teams under the command of Sergeant Kislowski were to deal with the rebels. Team One consisted of Kislowski and five troopers, while Team Two was led by Corporal Winslow. The latter included the Corporal, 3 Troopers and one Smart-Gunner. All were armed with laser rifles and had light body armor; several had grenades as well. Kislowski's orders were to seize the weapons, capture as many leaders as possible and kill or capture the rest.

The Security troops would attack from two sides, entering from the main entrances of both the park and compound. (I wasn't really happy with the plan, but it was better than piling everyone through one entrance.) Unfortunately, Team Two (at the compound gate) was spotted by gangers in the warehouse - Team One wouldn't be in position for another turn. The rebels in the park (listening to a speech) headed in the direction of the gunshots - Sgt. Hawkins of the rebel command team was especially worried about the Draconian entrusted to his protection. Team Two moved up and went prone after coming under fire from two sides - though they only took one light wound they were not happy, becoming even less so when the smart gunner was killed.

Team One (unnoticed until now) burst through the park entrance - taking some fire from the rebel command team. This wasn't enough to stop them. One grenade flew out and killed three rebels (the next shipment will have body armor in it ...); lasers caused a couple of casualties as well. While this was going on, the Underlords had climbed the chain-link fence on the north side of the warehouse, intending to hit the first PeeDee team from a third direction.

The next turn, the surviving members of Klark's Household Guard threw their guns down and fled screaming, leaving behind three dead and one seriously wounded. Team One settled down in the bushes and fired away. Team Two was still nervous enough to remain prone where they were, firing with little effect. The King Snakes now found themselves under fire from two directions; one of them had the sense to close the loading dock door, but not before another ganger fell. The Libbie Command Team fell back into cover; their fire wounded one member of Team One.

By this time, Zharek had decided it was time to go and was headed for the back door. Hawkins wanted to withdraw, but would have to climb the fence while under fire to do so. As he tried to hold off Team One, "Specs" and another King Snake fell to PeeDee lasers. The Underlords moved into position in and around the office and fired on Team Two, who returned fire and then moved behind a parked Hovercraft. One of the troopers lobbed a grenade at the closest Underlords, taking three of them out. Team One blasted away at the Libbie Command Team, killing all but one trooper. One trigger-happy private forgot his orders and blasted Smith, killing her instantly.

The remaining King Snakes decided the Draconian had the right idea and sprinted for the back door. The last Command Team trooper agreed and proceeded to rapidly climb the fence. The Underlords continued to fire on Team Two, but their heart wasn't in it. The next turn they dove out the back windows of the office building and escaped. Running ahead of them were the surviving King Snakes, Zharek and the last trooper. What was left of Klark's Household Guard had already disappeared ...

This left the Provisional Directorate teams with the field. They had taken two prisoners and most of the weapons. While they had failed to arrest any of the rebel leaders (the Draconian had escaped and the rest were all dead), they had only taken two casualties - one dead and one wounded.
