US SAILOR Of The Week Karen Mitchell |

For many sailors, the sport of sailing is simply a hobby or a passion. For Karen Mitchell, sailing is much more than that: it is also a lifesaver. Karen, of Deerfield Beach, FL, learned to sail when she was in her 30s, years after becoming a quadriplegic in a diving accident and soon after finishing chemotherapy to fight cancer. She first sailed at a demo sail at Shake-A-Leg Miami and soon was hooked. "Sailing to me is a vacation from life," she says. "The more I'm on the water, the better off I am." Now just a few years later, she has 3 consecutive national championship titles to her name and is aiming for a spot on the 2008 U.S. Paralympic Team in the new SKUD 18. Quite fittingly, the motto of her Paralympic campaign is "Sailing for Life." |
