Mentoring is an interactive process tailored to the individual. It is a process with strict ethics and should not be entered into lightly by the mentor. No one becomes a mentor overnight but rather must go through a learning and personal growth process. Mentoring requires of the mentor the following:
  1. Understanding what is needed by the person being mentored
  2. Finding a way to help that person find a solution to those needs
  3. Developing that person's skills in finding these solutions for themself.

Also, the person being mentored is challenged to commit the time and attention necessary to benefit from the relationship and is well served by following the four reliances.
