What difference a year makes! This time last year, there was water everywhere. This year is quite the opposite; in fact we are 5 inches below normal rainfall. It has been a much dryer and warmer winter and spring. Makes you wonder what the summer and fall will be like.
Last year, during the major flooding in our area many people stepped up to lend a helping hand. Jobs were numerous, filling sand bags, providing food for workers and providing shelter and food for the displaced. Yes, government agencies did their part, but I am referring to FAITH BASED originations that gave of themselves to fill the second greatest command, "LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."
After everything settled down, the members of Covenant Presbytery Board of Missions identified that there was no Cumberland presence during the flood. Yes, many of our people helped, but there was no organized effort by the CP church. The members of the BoM began to entertain the possibility of a presbytery wide Disaster Relief Team. To make a long story short, Presbytery met April 14 and voted to establish and fund the COVENANT PRESBYTERY DISASTER RELIEF TEAM. Within a week, God blessed the team with the donation of a trailer needed to house equipment. Many people throughout the presbytery have expressed an interest in being a part of the team.
Highland has an opportunity to help. If you cannot volunteer physical labor then you can PRAY that God will be honored in this effort and that lives will be touched. If you are physically able and willing to work with the Team, let me know.
The Mission Statement for the Disaster Relief Team is based on ISAIAH 6:8, "THEN I HEARD THE VOICE OF THE LORD SAYING, "WHOM SHALL I SEND? AND WHO WILL GO FOR US?" AND I SAID, HERE I AM. SEND ME!" (NIV) May God use those that are willing to say "SEND ME."
