Some of us indeed do...
What other vehicles are there? If it’s some kind of extrapolative synthesis, then what other database is there than “imitation or experience”?
Is there a similarity to a deaf person learning to speak without being able to hear his voice? So social gestures are like making a noise without being able to hear what it sounds like.
What else are we supposed to do? Develop our own “style” of doing so and call it “us”? Or internalize the manifold guidelines so that we can synthesize a bunch of responses which, as described in one of the other citations, may or may not be sincere, or unambiguous, or substantive at all? Just maybe, imitation and experience are as far into that mode of interaction as we care to venture.
