Feeling a little depressed? Do you think the Republicans are going to fool the people again and win another national election?
This is what it feels like when hope is on the run.
Take a deep breath. Get a grip. There is time; not a lot, but there is time.
In his speech at the Democratic convention Obama said the Republicans were going to try to make this election small. They would try to make it about feelings instead of issues; about distractions instead of what matters to most people.
Why are we surprised? The Republicans have a record that anyone would run away from. An 8 year record of almost complete failure. They know it and the mainstream press knows it.
But that’s not the narrative that’s coming out of the mainstream media or the McCain campaign. Their basic message is we had nothing to do with the mess Bush created! And, we will fix this mess! If you believe that you need to walk away from this computer, grab your baby bottle and climb into your crib. Make sure your parents tuck you in tonight.
The McCain campaign (and the national Republican Party) has reduced itself to lies and distortions on a level George Orwell would appreciate. And the mainstream media repeats most of it.
Folks, we’ve been here before. If we want to win this, we are going to have to do it ourselves. We can no longer outsource our politics and hope that someone else (Party regulars) will win an election for us. Ain’t gonna happen!*
Democrats, Republicans, Independents, people who haven’t voted in years (or ever), get out there and do something about the situation while there is still time. There is still a lot of hope left in our American experiment in self government. Let’s try to win this one for the people, by the people.
Things to do:
Sign up at Obama/Biden website (lots of links and ways to organize and participate locally)
Make plans to attend at least one rally before the election. If you can’t find a rally, help start one.
Put a yard sign in your yard
Wear your t-shirts and buttons
Talk to older relatives. Let them know what’s at stake (most young people-18 to 30 get it. They know their future is trashed).
*In Georgia we no longer have a Democratic Party. We have individuals who run as Democrats and a very small group of people who work for this thing called the Georgia Democratic Party; that’s about it. The Party apparatus is small and very weak (poor leadership). We also have Democratic candidates who run for office, and if they lose, they disappear. Or, in the case of Rep. Cynthia McKinney, move to California.
