What's the deal with Jepthah's daughter (Judges 11)? I had a Bible teacher that said Jepthah literally burned her as a sacrifice, but I always thought he simply forced her to remain unmarried. Why would the text draw so much attention to her childless state if the point was a burnt offering, not a sentence of childlessness? Which is it?

Ahhh, Jephthah's daughter...you must be in Mr. Raper's class. Did he use the term "crispy critter" this year, or did he abstain?

The text DOES say that he did according to his vow, so that certainly sounds like he sacrificed her. The point of emphasizing that she had no children was to heighten the tragedy...Jephtah would NEVER have an heir. His lineage was ended, which was a tragedy of the worst sort. No inheritance to pass on, no future in Israel, and no shot of being part of the Messiah's lineage. Sad days indeed.
