Re: Moralism
As I go through life, I now perfectly understand why you hate moralists so much. I came across this article about a certain anti-video game advocate and his dream project to create a video game of his own: http://gc.advancedmn.com/article.php?artid=5883 While I liked Manhunt, his proposal made me want to vomit, especally the level where the main character not only kills and piss on the corpses of a CEO, but her husban and kids. Even Rockstar Games wouldn't advocate the murder of children. (This jerk has even tried to crusade against the makers of The Sims 2 because the people have to get naked (with censor blurs) to bathe, including the kids, and he thinks it's pedophilia.
The thing that fucks-my-shit-up about these people is they bitch and cry about how immoral we are, yet their own sadistic tendoncies (Passion of the Christ) and hypocrasy (like Tom Delay pulling the plug on his own father) are perfectly ok. And these assholes want to rule the country (I fear that a new era of cruelty and repression would arise if they got their way. ALA the reign of John Calvin.)
Thanks for listening to me.

PS-I'm also a big admirer of Hugh Hefner. He had the guts to fight racism when "moralists" like Pat Robertson were praising segrigation and calling Nelson Mandella a commie.

Re: Website redesign
Dear David,
Since you're updating the BH site, I'm just wondering about something.
I just got my first Palm Pilot (the Tungsten one they advertised during the XMAS season).
I downloaded the Real player, which enables me to hear mp3's when I get the expansion card.
I'm wondering if you'll be offering the download option for your audio broadcasts like you used to do before you switched to the short rants (btw, is Talk Liberty officially dead?).
It would be nice to download your commentary and listen to it at work or in the car.
Hope all is well with you, and I'll see you on the List.
Sincerely,
Steve
Chicago, Illinois
(Thanks Steve! And WOW, I'm glad that people CAN download my RealAudio rants into their iPod. I was looking into podcasting, and now I guess I really don't have to do too much to get there! And Talk Liberty is in limbo right now but I'm still keeping the option open for its return.)

I was thinking that it was quite remarkable how long the physical design of the space shuttle has been around. When I was a youngstert in freaking 2cnd grade catholic school in the mojave desert. The nuns introduced a guy who gave a presentation about the future of space flight. He held some grey colored models of the space shuttle shape. i can remeber it like it was yesterday.? (Thanks Mark. Yeah, it's surprising just how long the design has stayed with NASA. I still remember when they showed the atmosphere tests of the Enterprise and how revolutionary those were in the 1970's. And now we have private ships like SpaceShipOne, which completely turned the shuttle model on its head.)

Good to see someone speaking out against the "I am a victim" mentality. BTW, I am 51 years old, 5"10", weigh 295, don't exercise, smoke, drink and love to cook and eat Cajun food such as fried turkey and the like. I have normal cholesterol, low blood pressure, no diabetes, normal blood workup, clean colonoscopy and chest x-rays. Am I increasing my risk? Yes. Do I know it? Yes. Should I stop some of the bad life-style choices? Probably. Would I enjoy my life more if I did? Probably not.
For what it's worth, I handled the suit in Louisiana where our Supreme Court ruled that the Louisiana Constitution prohibited the Attorney General from handing out cases with contingency fee provisions to private attorneys without specific legislative authorization. The suit involved an attempt by our attorney general to farm out by contract environmental suits against the oil industry in return for a contingency fee with a cap on attorney fees of 180 billion dollars. The ruling carried over into the tobacco suits. I think we are the only state (not sure on this now - the suit was a few years ago) with this proscription. I think the ruling was a good one. Contingency fees have their place in society, but they should bear some relationship to the quantity of work done on the case. I personally favor some sort of multiplier factor limitation, but I do not have many supporters.
Thanks again for the comment. Go have a hot dog!

Dave:
I've got to say that I have to disagree with you on this
one. I think that CNN should have done a better job hiring
the person for this job. Basically, the person in question
probably received the position only because she knew the person
responsible for hiring her. If this is the case, it
seriously detracts from CNN's credibility. Someone with 11
months experience and a photo stint in an adult magazine may
qualify her for an internship, but not much else. Anyone in a
position to hire who selects such an individual is only courting
disaster, is a relative, or is having a relationship with the
individual. Her inexperience will more than likely show
through somewhere down the line and will more than likely do a
great disservice to CNN. One thing about Matt Lauer and
Katie Couric's Today Show predecessors, remember Tom Brokaw and
Barbara Walters as well as Jane Paulie and Bryant Gumbel sat in
those charis previously, so experience and ability do count for
some things. You should know better than to show this
material to a Mass Comm major and expect him to see nothing
wrong. The person in question may in fact be competent and
skilled; however, she wouldn't get my nod for the position if I
were doing the hiring!
(Acutally, I sent this article to my "adopted bro" BECAUSE he has a degree in journalism. I just wanted to get a perspective from someone who was in that field. Phil was also the weekend news reporter for a local radio station in Keene, NH back in the late 1980's.)

Hi David,
I've sent this to both addresses. Let me know if I should delete one or the other.
Your revised website is a winner: better colors, faster load, easier navigation to your article of the week. Good show!
MY definitions follow.
Communism: Outright ownership of the means of production and distribution by the state. The only known instances of this were achieved by armed force. China, Cuba, USSR
Socialism: A mixture of state and private ownership of the means of production and distribution. A constantly fluctuating mix of fascism and communism. Known instances are achieved through the means mentioned for each. May be considered a euphemism for fascism.
Fascism: Control of privately owned means of production and distribution by means of regulation. All know instances of this form of government have been voluntary acceded to by a country's citizens. While used pejoratively to refer to Nazi Germany, the United States is the extant archetype, though the European community and its ex colonies are more draconian exemplars.
Dictatorship: A variant of socialism characterized by appointed or inherited leadership as opposed to elected domination. Best examples are the Middle East, parts of Africa, Central and South America, and China.
Hitler rulz, and communism has indeed, as Khrushchev prognosticated, buried us.
I suggest you pull off the gloves and tell it like it is in the language of the perpetrators. The sheeple are going to slaughter in ever increasing numbers, and willingly. I, for one, foresee another, inevitable uprising when push comes to shove. Not interested in militia movements-this event will take more than my lifetime to happen as it will be driven by the adoption of a different philosophy.
Politics follows society/culture, not the other way around. Ideas, or their absence, drive societal culture. The national monetary debt is nothing compared with America's ideological deficit. The truth is out there but few are listening.
The enemies of freedom have control of academia and the education of the young is a mind mangling experience. I fear things must get worse before they will get better. There is widespread acceptance of the idea that one belongs to the state, that one's wealth is properly appropriated by authority for the use of others, and that resistance is futile.
The disarming of the populace has begun. Corporations are caving to governmental demands right and left. The food police are at the door and the gene therapists will cooperate in the creation of a Stepford Society. Would that I knew where to run.
I'm on the verge of misanthropy and need to constantly remind myself of the joie de vivre exhibited by most despite their political stupidity.
There is a correlation between the abdication of personal liberty, the rise in crime, and the lowering of taste in the arts.

I write as I listen to a broadcast of my county's board meeting where they are debating what a property owner may do with his land. My neighbor spent months getting permission from the city to build a garage on his property. When one does not control the use of one's property, including his person, he does not own that property. You put a label on it. Some call it slavery.

Re: How
The GOP Lost The Impeachment Trial
"And yet, when the final votes were tallied, the GOP couldnt even secure a majority to convict, never mind the two-thirds majority that was required by the Constitution to oust the President."
For the record, this statement is incorrect. There is no distinction between conviction and ouster. They are a single verdict. Conviction automatically causes removal from office. A two thirds vote is required to convict, and removal from office then occurs by operation of the constitution.
The possibility of 'conviction' by a simple majority, but falling short of a two third vote for ouster, does not exist.

Re: Black
Valentines
If it's any consolation, I don't like Valentine's Day, either. As a matter of fact, I don't like any man-made "holiday" that's just a flimsy excuse to make people spend money and/or feel like losers. I've *never* been on a date, that's the honest truth, and it's not because I look like homemade sin or because no one's ever expressed an interest in me, it's because at this point in my life, I'd rather be alone with my cats and my computer and my cable t.v. It sounds like a lonely life, and sometimes it is, but it works for me. I don't "hate" men (well, sometimes I do, but that's another story), I just don't have the time (or the patience) to develop an intimate relationship with them. "What's this got to do with me?" you may ask. Well, nothing, really. I just thought I'd share a tiny bit of my non-life with you.
Oh, and feel free to add any of my comments to your "letters" page; I would be floored to have other people to see my name and read my loopy thoughts in a public domain (it's an ego thing for me; only once have I had a letter of mine printed in a magazine and that was on the last page of the "Supermodels" NSS).

I have several words to say regarding kids and parents and computers, but first let me start with a one-word response to your latest "Brutally Honest:"
AMEN!
There are good parents out there, and sometimes they have bad kids. But there are far more parents that don't get involved with their kids' lives. They drop them off at the mall or the skating rink for hours, then pick them up and drop them off at a friend's house, without finding out what is happening there. They expect the schools to teach them right and wrong, when most lessons are learned by observing their parents when they are at home. Our teachers are the most underpaid babysitters in the world, and they're asked to be parents to a lot of the children they have to instruct. Most can't sit back and idly watch a kid go down the toilet (thank God!), but that's asking too much in my opinion. Until parents get involved in their children's lives and make some time for them, we're going to have kids asking for attention by visiting adult web sites, doing drugs, getting guns and shooting their schoolmates, and even taking their own lives
My advice to parents worried about their kids stumbling onto adult sites is: monitor your kids when they're online! If they get to a site you don't feel comfortable with, pull the plug! Better yet, why not talk to them about such sites and tell them that there's nothing there they need to see (at least not yet!) If they can't do that, then install some net-minder software, or at least learn enough about their computer to see what sites their kids are visiting. If they can't monitor it, don't let them use the computer.

Hello David,
Just jumped over from one of the old Playboy Mailing Lists were you contributed something about the November issue of Playboy. Anyway, I really enjoyed your website and read some of your articles. Damned, I would like that my English was good enough to write articles myself on Internet (I'm from The Netherlands and Dutch is my first language and it is hard to make yourself clear when you have to write in another language). Anyway, I would point you to a case in South Korea where a friend is prosecuted because of some nudity on his personal homepage. Not because of copyright infringement but just because nudity is forbidden in some Asian countries. Can you believe that? Is this freedom of speech?
Anyway, this guy (Chris) is fighting back against the system and made a website where he is asking people to support him. Over the past days almost 20,000 people visited his website and signed his guestbook. It was also in most of the Korean newspapers last week and I bet more newspapers will follow. Unfortunately most of it is written in Korean (I can't read it as well but I got the point). Perhaps you can give it some attention in either the Mailing List or on your website.
You can find his story at http://user.chollian.net/~irocz28/ (Korean) or some tidbits on my website at http://www.sunghi.com/frames.html

Hi guy -
I enjoy and appreciate your rants and have netminder monitoring your site for changes. You might consider putting a link to netminder on your page.
I heard a medical comment to the effect that fellatio is more common in the United States than elsewhere (source was not mentioned and would be suspect in any case) perhaps because most American men have been circumcised thus rendering their penises less sensitive and therefore more easily pleasured by the mouth than the vagina. Yes, these remarks were occasioned by l'affaire du jour. I just thought you would appreciate this particular insight: one has to laugh.
Being gay and quite fond of sucking dick myself I have to snicker at learning from you that oral sex is illegal in Georgia. Perhaps some time in the slammer with dudes who are into butt fucking would 'straighten' our President out when it comes to setting legislative priorities.
Once I become more adept at web page construction I intend to offer commentary on current events with an emphasis on historical and philosophical points, which brings me to the second reason I write today.
We are not all blessed with equal talents in all areas and I sincerely hope you can find a friend to help you with the color scheme of your site. Since you run text from margin to margin the large type is nice and red hyper links are always sure to get attention. However, puce on yellow verges on nauseating and does not jibe with the forthrightness of your messages.
Best wishes.

I don't want to rain on you analysys of the poor situation with the 14 year old.I agree with you 100%.But and I mean a big BUT.The major reason for all these killings is the easy availability of guns in your society. The American right to bear arms thing is out dated and stupid.I am American born living in NFLD CANADA. The city I live has apopulation of 160,000 people. Not that small. What is small is the murder rate .One person was murdered with a gun in this city last year! One.
(I'm glad we both agree with the analysis of the Kentucky murders. However, the cause is more than just the availability of guns in America. Sure they're available, but so are knives. The boy could have just as easily showed up with a buck knife and started stabbing his victims. Guns are quicker, easier to kill from a distance.
I would agree that in an ideal world, we could do without guns. But we don't live in an ideal world. Guns are sometimes a necessity.
Gainesville is a growing community, residing just outside the Metro Atlanta area, but still has a small-town mentality. While crime has been on the increase in Gainesville, it decreased in the more rural North Hall area, especially after two very public cases of burglars that were shot by home owners. Crude, yes. But the law considered these to be justifiable, and once the word got out that burglars and trespassers can be shot on sight, crime in this area dropped like a stone. There are still plenty of folks around here who never have to worry about locking up their doors at night.
It's easy to say that one city in America can have X number of deaths by guns, while another city outside of America will only have a miniscule amount. But one has to go further than a relatively simplified look at crime statistics. How many murders were there without guns? How many hit-and-run accidents, stabbings, strangulations, arsons, poisonings? How many assaults were there? The absence of a gun does not mean there is an absence of the urge to kill. Then we have to look at the makeup of the community. Is this a homogenous community, or a more fluid and transient community with varying groups of people? When you break it down, the comparison becomes apples and oranges.
Still, I appreciate your views, and I'm glad you visited my site, and I hope you'll continue to do so.)

Hi.
Let me introduce myself. My name is Kath. I moved to Gainesville, Ga. about 6 months ago with my husband from Orlando. I was just sitting here cruising along the web and saw your ingenious web site. Very interesting. I looked at most of your postings and most of your ideas and opinions are very simular to those of my own.
I sat here reading about your thoughts on AOL and the chatroom situations... you know, how adult chat rooms are turned into sexual frensies and not taken as "adult general chat rooms" without kids being able to get into the conversation...etc. It made me think of what I was involved with in Orlando. I was a part of a local BBS called "Infinite Space Online Systems".
I'm not sure if you are familiar with the local bbs scenes or not. I tried to locate a local bbs here in Gainesville but have had little success so far. Infinite Space is a local bbs/internet access service provider for the Orlando area. I was online for 3 years with them, and had an absolute blast. You seem to be the type of person who would implement his own board/system.
I invite you to check out the website for Infinite Space at "w3inspace.net/index2.htm". Read about them - even check out the board. Through the internet you can access them for pennies - versus the dreaded amount AOL charges. I invite you to talk to one of the owners of the board, his name is Charlie Scherker, online handle of "Buzz". His email address is "Buzz@genesis.ispace.com". Mention me, Kath. He knows me quite well.
I am no longer a listed member of the board, but Charlie will know who you are talking about. Ask him how he got started in 87 and how far he's come. It sounds like starting a board like that is right up your alley.
Just an idea. Just a thought. Perhaps this is what you need. Instead of being "one of the payers" be a "payee".
Even if this isnt up your alley, give me an email once in a while. If it is up your alley... let me know.
Sincerely,
Kath Harris-Levine

Your site portrays a person with little idea of anything occurring outside the USA. In fact, most people in the world live outside the US.
Your 'work in progress' lacks continuity and logic. I cannot understand the points you are trying make. People questioned society long before the 1950s, for example. And as for personal responsibility, ask yourself if you would forsake your automobile to help alleviate the havoc the USA's oil gluttony wreaks on the world? If not for legislation, would your foam factory voluntarily stop using CFCs and suffer a cut in profits?
You seem to be a person of little taste. The mass-produced Hong Kong oil painting (in fact, acrylic) in the opening shot suggests this.
The garish, and apparently random, proliferation of colored text throughout the pages confirms it. Use of profanity goes beyond bad taste, it is usually indicative of a poor vocabulary. Don't give up your day job just yet.
Finally, you write "the only editing I do with these letters is trimming it to context of my site, and that's it". Apart from the sentence being ungrammatical, as far as I can see this is no different from the censorship you profess to abhor. It will be interesting to see to what extent this email is "edited". That is, in the unlikely event it ever appears at all.
Best regards
Paul Rigby
(First of all, thank you for that little geography reminder. I never claimed to know what the day-to-day life of people in Bangledesh is, or how the average everyday person living in Copenhagen responds to the price of coffee.
In reagrds to my "work in progress," perhaps you should re-read the article. The 'society' mentioned is the Industrial Society, which started with the Industrial Revolution in the 1800's. There will be more on this distinction in the near future. Remember this IS a work in progress...
As for giving up my car, if the circumstances warranted it I'm sure I would. Unfortunately such is not the case, nor am I able to purchase the new electric cars that just hit the market. Even if I did, though, I doubt that would appease your critique of the energy situation...
The foam factory you talk about is not mine - I'm just the one who created, sponsors, and maintains the web site for them. And I also know it doesn't use CFCs in it's products, nor HCFCs, nor HFCs, and makes that distinction plain - which you would know if you visited that site.
I have no idea what painting are you referring to? Hong Kong? I'm sorry that the world doesn't reflect your artistic tastes, but I myself never cared for a picture of dogs playing poker.
As for the language and text in my article, would you prefer black text on white background? It would be about the same as the bowdlerized english you apparently expect others to use.
Finally, what is there to censor in this letters page? A handful of letters I get are business-related that make mention of visiting my site before talking about their site or business. One person also asked me questions about a local pizza restaurant and to look up a friend living in town. Would you rather I printed that person's name, address, and phone number for the world to see? There is a difference between "editing to context" and censorship. I'm sorry that you don't see that difference.
Despite my better judgement Paul, you can see that I HAVE added your letter to this page, AS you sent it- with my rebuttal included.)

I agree with your peeve about these subscription sites, but your premise that not-for-profits can't have them is just wrong. Any NFP an engage in fee-for service activities, as long as the underlying purpose is consistent with it's overriding goals and as long as any "profits" are spent on its charitable, educational, etc. purposes. That's why, for example, universities can charge admission to football games, make big bucks on TV contracts and bowl games: the money goes to the university to support educational purposes and other money-losing sports activities.
(True, but it's a fine line for any not-for-profit group, especially for the smaller organizations, to be engaging in anything remotely connected to a pay operation. Universities and large NFP groups may be able to get away with it given the finances involved to running such an operation, but can the same be said of those aforementioned smaller groups? Remember that NFP is a tax-exempt status, and one that can be revoked if a group is suspected of running anything that even hints of generating profit.)

Every time I go out to surf, I find more and more like myself. Nice site. I think I actually have read something of yours in the AJC. It was probably about 3 years ago when I lived in Atlanta. I now reside in Milledgeville trying to finish school. If it's OK I'll add you as a book mark to my as yet unfinished web page. Take care...
Jeremy
(Thanks Jeremy! And please let me know when your site is up so I can visit it!)

Great page. I'm also about your age and have known since I was about 9 that the boomers would screw everything they touched and being younger I would be stuck with the mess they left. That kinda leads to another Law. Every thing must be paid for, it doesn't matter who but some one pays....
(I agree. Matter of fact, that is now Matthews' Law #27! With credit going to Steve for suggesting it, of course...)

It's hard to take somebody seriously who doesn't even know where they live. Gainesville is in Florida.
(Apparently, Dan, you don't look at a map. There is ANOTHER Gainesville besides the one in Florida. Two, acutally... The name "Gainesville" is not exclusive to the one singular Florida community. Although to be honest I do find it bizzare that you would base your criteria of a person's credibility on your knowledge of geography. Would you have sent the same message to someone from Gainesville, Texas?)

You make two points that I agree with in your current article (10/21/96). The legal definition of sexual harassment has gotten out of hand and we need some rationalility on this subject. You have said this better than I would be able to.
On a separate topic. I have read your back articles and have startrd reading the current articles. I have found them interesing and a few have been quite funny. Thankyou for making them available.

(Re: The NEW Society)
Very impressive. Obviously, you are a philosopher and thinker and probably quite manic to have such a mental flair, manic being the ambrosia of the writer/thinker.
I agree with alot of what you say. However, your worship of the individual as the new "modus" for society has some flaws in that the African Americans have taken this a bit far by having 80% of their babies out of wedlock and kicking the fathers as far away as possible. Having seen some of these "men", I can't blame the women for doing so.
Nonetheless, the breakdown of the family by the individualism that is rampant may well tear the fabric of society so far that political gangsterism, such as we see in the Democratic/Republican UniParty wherein all politicians suck from the pap of industrialists, labor unions, and special interest groups and represent no one but their own re-election procresses. The fact is the individualism tends to promoste a gangster mentality requiring subterfuge, rage, groupism, and other tribal enhancements.
Nict wahr?
(Appreciate the compliment.. I think.. but we have to disagree on the role of the individual. The things you mention concerning the African Americans deal with individuality WITHOUT personal responsibility. That is something being addressed by those in the African American commuity even now. The same holds true with the "breakdown of the family" - if such a term can be attributed. If you read the whole article you would know that the concept of the family will continue, even though it will have to change and accomodate the societal transition we are currently in.)

Great site. Thanks for being a constructive force in the battle against tyranny. I, too, have strong libertarian beliefs and have been active in the libertarian movement for about nine years. However, I am involved with the Republican Party, specifically in the Republican Liberty Caucus. I do plan to vote for Harry Browne, though....

I thought I might have found a legitimate Conservative until I saw your reference to "jack booted thugs" in your writings. Sorry your credability went down the tubes with that statement.
Conservative I can agree with but ultra right wing opinions hold no water with me.
Dick
(Note: I believe he is referring to my Home page, which makes reference to "electronic jackbooted thugs of the government." Specifically, the idiots in government who want to censor the Internet. I know this is the only time I use such a term to describe the government. But it is interesting that my credability rested with three words out of thousands. I could have used the term "heavy-handed cyber-idiots" but would people really understand such a concept? Also, sorry to disappoint people, but I'm not a Conservative. I am a political cynic who happens to think more in line with Libertarians than anyone else. And they are certainly NOT "ultra right wing.")

Dave: I like the way you think. This is unusual as most people I've known that had a "literary" education (none as coveted as yours) have tended towards a colectivist ideal. Your opinions are refreshing coming from a classically schooled "academic" (P.J. O'rourke excluded). I envy your understanding of classic literature because I had to take engineering out of neccesity however, I spend as much of my spare time as permits reading the classics and western philosophy. As a Canadian I feel we could use more people like yourself in the Canadian university system. Liberty is a little used word in our political landscape and I feel the result has been the potential break-up of the dominion. Up here "the great debate" which was the normal ideoligical discourse between left and right has denegrated to a shouting match between right and wrong depending who is in power. Please try postig the odd time to the can.politics user group. They could use a libertarian bent. Great page, excellant ob!

Not only that, how did you hook up with Lovey???... ...Paix.

Really enjoyed your "rantings" in Pet Peeves! Go for it!
I also believe your observations regarding our liberty, freedom and the narrow drain it's heading down. I, for one, intend to WORK at getting Harry Browne elected, or, at the very least, visible to the masses.
Imagine the debate between "0 income tax" Harry and the Republicrats (or Demopublicans)! WE NEED TO GET THE CONCEPTS HEARD BY ALL!
Keep up the good work. You might consider offering 'jumps' to some of the Libertarian pages.
Thanks again.
(I've included a few. "3rd Party Central" is a good site, as well as the Libertarian Party, the LP of Georgia, and most recently for Harry Browne's campaign website as well. And if there are any more PLEASE let me know! I'll be including more and more libertarian websites as I find them!)

Hello ... I just stumbled upon your essay regarding the future directions of societal change. I like it, sometime soon I'd like to add it to my web site, 3rd Party Central.
The point of this site is to encourage interest in political and societal ideologies that differ from those the Republicans and Democrats just ASSUME we'll buy into. The method (as you will see upon visiting) is to encourage a sort of free-market competition among the non-traditional political parties. ... but enough about all that.
I'm planning to add a section to the site called "3rd Party Wisdom," where I make available a bunch of essays that encourage interest in each of these ideologies. Your essay would make a nice addition to the section on Libertarianism.
Let me know how you feel about the idea...
Tim Barber
3PC founder (and Libertarian)
(See Ira? It's there! And I've checked out the other essays as well. They vary from the satirical to the serious. It's rather impressive to be included in such a collection of some pretty intelligent people who don't subscribe to the 2-party system. We're the idiots, they say? Hardly!)

David,
Interesting web site.
Maybe you should run for office. Seriously.
Jim
(Wouldn't mind.. and like I said in my home page I DO accept all offers for public office. But think about this for a minute.. an unmarried Libertarian writer, running for office in a community dominated by a political atmosphere that mandates a candidate be married? Not to mention I would essentially become one of the very things which I have been rallying against- politicians! Still I like the thought...)
