History:
730 was originally occupied by WVNN in Athens, who moved to 770 for greater coverage. WVVN vacated the frequency around 1986. 730 was revived around 1989 and was licensed to Madison. The calls were WJMW. The format was black contemporary, then rock. Later the station went dark for a year or so. During that time, I-565 was built over the transmitter site. The frequency became active again around 1993 and changed owners frequently until Carl Sampiere bought it around 1994. He changed the format to sports (and the calls to WUMP -- UMPire) and sold it to Bill Dunnavant who also owns a number of Teneessee Valley stations. Dunnavant sold the station to Cumulus Media at some point.
.
It was reported in late October 2008 that the station has gotten permission to rebroadcast on FM translator W278AA, licensed to Madison.  This gives Huntsville its first FM sports talk on 103.9 MHz.  The translator was originally on 103.5 and rebroadcast the 93.3 station out of Tullahoma, Tennessee.
