Hurricane watch
- Fill
up vehicles with gas
- Get
cash, including a roll of quarters
- Continually
listen to NOAA weather radio or local radio or TV stations for updated information
- Heed
the advice if they tell you to do so. Avoid flooded roads and watch for washed-out
bridges and roadways
- Prepare
your property for high winds (See Protect your property)
- Full
charge cell phones and other rechargeable appliances.
- Turn
refrigerator and freezer to coolest setting.
- Put
valuables in a safe box.
Hurricane warning
- Listen
to NOAA weather or TV.
- Close
all interior doors. Secure and brace external doors to prevent winds from entering
room.
- Put
as many vehicles as possible in garage.
- Fill
sinks and tubs to provide water for washing, drinking and cooking.
- Cover
pool pump filter and super-chlorinate the pool.
- Put
shutters (or plywood) on windows.
- Moving
things inside or tie down things that might fly and cause damage.
- Know
the evacuation route.
If you're not advised
to evacuate:
- Stay
indoors on the first floor away from windows, skylights and glass doors.
- Have
as many walls between you and the outside wind as possible.
- Stay
under something sturdy, such as a table, to protect against falling objects.
- Don't
use open flames as a source of light.
- If
power is lost, turn off major appliances to reduce surges and damage.
- Watch
for flooding and be alert for tornadoes.
Protect your
property
- Keep
trees and shrubbery trimmed. Make trees wind-resistant by removing diseased and
damaged limbs.
- Clear
loose and clogged rain gutters.
- Install
hurricane shutters. Or install anchors for plywood (marine plywood is best) and
pre-drill holes in precut half-inch holes in precut half-inch outdoor plywood boards so
that you can cover the windows of your home quickly. Mark which board fits which
window. (Tape doesn't prevent windows from breaking.)
- Cover
all windows, French doors, sliding glass doors and skylights. If these fail, the
wind can rip off the roof and cause walls to collapse. Or the wind can scour the
interior and wreck the contents.
- Strengthen
garage doors.
