My Motocross Years

Back in 1970-1972 I raced motocross almost every weekend. I was OK but no expert by any sense of the imagination. I did love it and had I not broken both arms and injured a leg pretty seriously I probably would have continued racing for many more years than I did at the time. But after my wife gave me the ultimatum that if I broke myself up again she wasn’t going to do the things for me that someone has to do when you have both arms in casts up to your shoulders. So I sold my beloved 250 cc CZ motocross bike and quit racing, at least for 33 years when I got the itch again. I heard there were races that old timers like me could enter and race the old bikes from back in the heyday of motocross - my racing days. So I looked on the internet for a bike that had been restored or could be restored like I used to race back in the 70’s. Would you believe I found one for sale in Florida just like the one I raced and loved so much back in “the day”. Voila!

Off to Florida I went, with my older brother who loved racing the old bikes back then just as much as I did, to buy my second CZ.

After 13 hours of driving and great anticipation we arrived in Yulee, Florida, just north of Jacksonville. We found the house, with help from good old Map Quest, and there before my eyes was a 1971 250 CZ motocross bike just like the one I raced back in “the day”. Well, to make a long story short, I bought the bike, brought it home, and started racing vintage motocross and have been for the last four or five years.

As my joints get stiffer and my bones ache more every day I find I can’t go nearly as fast as I did back in “the day” but I still love the feel, the excitement and the sound of that great old bike that I raced so proudly back in “THE DAY”.
