Second Generation from Henry Horger, Sr.

2.  HENRY2 HORGER, JR. (HENRY (HEINRICH)1) was born Abt. 1699 in Zurich, Switzerland.  He married ANNA CATHARINA.

Known children of HENRY HORGER and ANNA CATHARINA are:

                i.   MARIA (MARY) MAGDELENE3 HORGER, b. October 20, 1756, Orangeburgh, South Carolina6.

7.             ii.   CATHERINA HORGER, b. March 25, 1758

iii.   ELIZABETH HORGER, b. December 25, 17596 , Orangeburgh, South Carolina.

3.  JACOB2 HORGER (HENRY (HEINRICH)1) was born Abt. 1723 in Zurich, Switzerland, and died abt. 1794 in Orangeburgh, South Carolina.  He married LOVISIA SHAUMLOFFEL 1740 in Orangeburg County, SC7, daughter of JOHANNES SHAUMLOFFEL and MARIA ???.  She was born in 1724 in Zurich, Switzerland4, and died 1767 in Orangeburgh, South Carolina6.

The Rev. John Giessendanner performed the marriage ceremony between Jacob and Lovisa Horger.  The actual date of the union is not clear. Most references cite 1740, while other’s use 1747 which places the marriage closer to the time when their children begin to arrive.  Giessendanner did not make a diary entry into his Book of Record at the time the ceremony occurred, or either those pages have been lost.  However, sometime after 1749 he did prepare a list of all marriages that he performed in Orangeburgh that cited their union.  No dates were noted on the list6.  Until I discover proof that clarifies which date is accurate, I’m using the 1740 date after Sarrett7 which is the generally accepted date.

Jacob Horger participated in the American Revolution serving as private in Capt. Jacob Rumph's company, Orangeburgh District militia16.

Jacob Horger purchased property around the Four Holes Swamp area in the Orangeburgh District19.  He bought 300 acres from George Giessendanner on May 1, 1759. Later on June 22, 1768 he purchased 800 acres (plat 9:234).

It is believed Jacob Horger died about 1794. Again, uncertainty  surrounds his date of death.  Some references cite it as late as 1811.  However, according to an article on the Horger Family published by the  OGSS19, a will with codicil dated January 9, 1793 was proved about February 5, 1794.  This document is referenced by Court of Chancery (Orangeburg Court of Appeals in Equity) Vol. IV by DeSaussure on page 267. This places Jacob’s date of death around 1794.

Children of JACOB HORGER and LOVISIA SHAUMLOFFEL are:

8.             i.   MAGDELENE3 HORGER, b. 17494, d. 1782

9.             ii.   JACOB HORGER, JR., b. Abt. 1752; d. 18074.

10.          iii.   MARGARET (PEGGY) HORGER, b. January 02, 17546

11.          iv.   MARY HORGER, b. Abt. 17564; d. October 03, 180715.

12.           v.   CATHERINA HORGER, b. Bef. May 18, 17586.

13.          vi.   JOHN HORGER, b. October 28, 17586; d. August 13, 1811.

4.  CATHARINA2 HORGER (HENRY (HEINRICH)1) was born 1725 in Waldenburg, Canton, Basel, Switzerland.  She married HEINRICH HENRY STROMAN April 01,1740 in Orangeburg County, SC.  He was born Abt. 1720 in Switzerland.  Catharina Horger died in Orangeburgh District and is buried in the Stroman Family Cemetery located in Orangeburg (off Hwy. 301).

Children of CATHARINA HORGER and HEINRICH STROMAN are6:

                i.   HANS HENRY3 STROMAN (STRAUMAN), b. May 24, 1741, Orangeburg District, SC.

ii.   HANS JACOB STROMAN, b. September 1748, Orangeburg District, SC.

iii.   CATHARINA STROMAN, b. November 1750, Orangeburg District, SC.

iv.   JOHN STROMAN, b. July 07, 1754, Orangeburg District, SC.

                v.   JACOB STROMAN, b. November 17, 1756, Orangeburg District, SC.

5.  BARBARA2 HORGER (HENRY (HEINRICH)1) was born 1727 in Zurich, Switzerland.  She married JOHN GIESSENDANNER abt. 1759.

Barbara did not immigrate to America with her parents and siblings. She remained in Switzerland and entered service as a maid in the canton of Zurich.  By 1740 she had an illegitimate child and sought permission to immigrate to join her father in Carolina with it. Barbara requests permission to emigrate and to take with her property of 90 crowns5. The Swiss government grants her permission and she leaves Switzerland accompanying Peter Huber and his wife and children, to Carolina by way of Philadelphia, arriving at the port of Charleston on October 7, 1742.

[Authors Note: Little is known about Barbara Horger. She is believed to have married REV. JOHN GIESSENDANNER (christened as HANS ULRICH GIETZENTANDER) after his first wife, Barbara Hugg, died from childbirth.   John Giessendanner and Barbara Hugg had 7 children between 1742 and March of 17586.  John Giessendanner married another Barbara whose surname has never been proven.  According to Joop Giessendanner’s published theory on who this other Barbara is, it is most likely either BARBARA EGLY or BARBARA HORGER based on his database of eligible women named Barbara (click here to read Joop Giessendanner’s theory about the second Barbara).  Other researchers have indicated that Barbara Horger married a Giessendanner. This has been a generally accepted fact. My belief is the reason little is known about Barbara Horger is based on the fact she may have been shamed by giving birth to an illegitimate child, circumstances unknown. She may have lived with either her father, Henry Horger Sr. or more likely, entered into service as a housekeeper of John Giessendanner. Her services as a maid or housekeeper while in Switzerland are documented fact5, so she is an experienced housekeeper. Furthermore, counting backwards from the date of birth of her daughter, Anna, one can see she and John Giessendanner would have known one another very well prior to his first wife’s death. Being in his service would have afforded her that opportunity.  This theory is under research by both Joop Giessendanner and myself.  Until proven otherwise, I shall continue to use John Giessendanner as Barbara Horger’s husband as I believe this is the most likely scenario.]

Known children of BARBARA HORGER and JOHN GIESSENDANNER are6:

                i.   ANNA GIESSENDANNER, b. September 10, 1759, Orangeburgh, South Carolina.

6.  MAGDALENE2 HORGER (HENRY (HEINRICH)1) was born 1730, and died 1805 and buried in the Moorer Family Cemetery in Orangeburg.  She married PETER MURER JR. (MOORER) April 02, 1751 in Orangeburg County, SC6.  He was born 1720 in Appenwell, Buchah, Zurich, Switzerland, and died 1790 in Orangeburgh, South Carolina19.

Giessendanner recorded the marriage in his Book of Record with the following citation6:

“On Tuesday April 2d In Orangeburgh Church ---- by Banns Peter Murer Junr. To Magdalene Horguer; Both of this Township. Being present: Valentine Yutzy, Samuel Suther etc."
