Generation No. 1

1.  Unknown  KOLLER1

Known KOLLER Brothers:

2.                i.       BENEDICT CULLER2 (KOLLER), b. Germany; d. Orangeburg, South Carolina.

3.               ii.       HANS KOLLER, b. 1695, Bern, Switzerland.

Hans and Benedict Kollar were on ships passenger list that came to port in Charleston, SC on July 13, 1735.  A total of 250 Switzer's arrived in Charleston that day on a ship piloted by Captain Hugh Percy after a voyage lasting nine weeks from Rotterdam and six weeks from Cowes. The route most of the Swiss immigrants take is to Basel, then up the Rhine River to Rotterdam, Holland. From there they cross over the English Channel to Cowes, England. From Cowes, they would sail to either Charleston or Philadelphia.  The entire voyage could take up to 6 months to complete.

200 of the 250 went up the Edisto River to Orangeburg on July 27, 1735 to settle a new colony founded by Swiss-German immigrants.  45 of the 250 , comprised of 18 families, left by ship (hte. Billinder Oliver owned by Samuel Merchant, Shipmaster from SC) to Philadelphia, PA.

Benedict Kollar was among the group who settled in Orangeburg.  His brother, Hans was in the group who sailed to Philadelphia.

Generation No. 2

2.  BENEDICT CULLER2 (KOLLER)) was born  in Germany1, and died in Orangeburg, South Carolina.  He married MAGDELENA SPRINGIN January 01, 1739/40 in Orangeburg, SC1, daughter of JOHANNES SPRINGIN and MARGARET ???.

Benedict Kollar was among the group of familied who settled in Orangeburg.  Most of this group was from Berne, Switzerland and the nearby German province.  They made a settlement on the east bank of the Edisto, or Pon Pon.  The townsite had already been laid out with streets and numbered lots. The name given to it was Orangeburgh after the William IV, Prince of Orange, the German son-in-law of King George II. Benedict was given Land Lot No. 399 facing Middleton St. and 50 acres of land on Limestone Swamp. Based on the size of the land grant, it is believed he was unmarried at the time he arrived.  It is not known whether he ever lived in town or if he immediately went to his farm land.

A record of births, marriages and deaths of the settlers in the township was kept by Rev. John Giessendanner, a Lutheran pastor, who had come with a second group of emigrants from the same section as the first, in 1737.  The original Giessendanner Book of Record is now in the Carolina Library (click here to see scanned document images and translations of this important historical document). Excerpts published in "A History of Orangeburg County", by A.S.Salley records that on New Year's Day in 1740 Benedict Koller married Magdaline Springin in a private ceremony at the house of her father's, Johannes Springin. Witnesses were Jacob Pier, Hans Fridig, and Jacob Kuhn.

From the Giessendanner record, the children of  BENEDICT (KOLLER) and MAGDELENA SPRINGIN are well documented including their baptismal records, and notations about those that died as infants.  The children of BENEDICT (KOLLER) and MAGDELENA SPRINGIN are:

                   i.       ANNA3 CULLER, b. Abt. 1741.

                  ii.       MARGRET CULLER, b. November 14, 17391.

4.              iii.       BENEDICT (BENJAMIN) CULLER II, b. December 12, 1746; d. Aft. 1800.

                 iv.       ELIZABETH CULLER, b. April 03, 17561.

                  v.       JOHN ULTRICK CULLER, b. January 30, 1760, Orangeburg, SC; d. February 05, 1760, Orangeburg, SC.

3.  HANS2 KOLLER  was born 1695 in Bern, Switzerland2.  He married SUSANNAH ?2 Bef. 17262.  She was born Abt. 17002.

HANS KOLLER came to port in Philadelphia from Charleston on August 26, 1735. His family was among the 18 Swiss families that sailed on the hte Billinder Oliver, piloted by Samuel Merchant. A reproduction of The Ship Captains List of Inhabitants and Oath of Allegiance are located in the Pennsylvania State Library in Harrisburg, PA. Photograph plates of the documents are also published in A.B. Faust's book "Lists of Swiss Emigrant in the Eighteenth Century to the American Colonies". The Captains List document was a two page hand scripted document front and back. The front consists of the heads of households taken transported from South Carolina to Philadelphia and documents their acceptance of the Oath of Allegiance. It is signed by the passenger.  The back contains an itemized list of all 45 persons on board the ship.  The front reads in its entirety:

It is interesting to note that the Captains Log of names were written in his hand and therefore spelling differences occured between his and the signatures written by the head of the households on the previous page. Most likely the Captain received the names orally and did not the spelling of certain German letters. I've noted the obvious misspellings in this transcription based on the previous page and the work of A.B. Faust

They took the Oath of Allegiance to King George ll upon their arrival in Philadelphia. The oath is transcribed as follows in its entirety:

Benedict Koller, Jr. either changed his name to, or became known as the English "Benjamin". He dropped the use of Jr. and simply became known as Benjamin Culler. Benjamin built his home on the Culler property just above that of his father on Caw Caw and a little nearer to Limestone Creek.  The place was known as Scuffletown. His occupation was a farmer.

During the Revolutionary War,  Benjamin Culler furnished provisions for Continental use. Later he became a member of Captain Jacob Rumph's Company of Partisans and became known as "Benjamin the Patriot."

6.  JACOB4 CULLER (BENEDICT (BENJAMIN)3, BENEDICT CULLER2) was born February 12, 1780, and died July 26, 1858.  He married three times, first to (1) REBEKAH JENNINGS.  She died November 25, 1817 possibly during childbirth. He married (2) RACHEL MARIE ZEIGLER.  She died June 11, 1834. He then married (3) SARAH ELIZABETH INABNIT, daughter of JACOB INABNIT and ELIZABETH GOLSON.  She was born February 20, 1818, and died January 28, 1877.

The house known as the Culler house was built by Jacob Culler in 1805 on a hill off Bull Swamp Road (now Newberry Road)  8 or so miles northwest of Orangeburg, in the Limestone Community.  According to Daniel Culler in his book "Orangeburgh District 1768-1868 History and Records", the house was a typical 19th century two story frame construction, built with hand-hewn lumber attached with handmade nails -- all made on site.  He notes certain features of the original house:

  •  wide pine flooring -- some 15 inches in width;
  •  English bond brick chimney  (Williamsburg style brickwork);
  •  two rooms with adjoining "shed" rooms on first floor;
  •  two rooms on the second floor;
  •  front porch that extends the length of the house (later removed as house expanded);
  •  the kitchen was placed some distance behind the house.

Numerous additions were made to the house as the family grew. Two new rooms were added, one on each floor.  The new first floor room became the master bedroom and a dressing and dining room were attached behind it.   The house remained unchanged until the early 1930's when modern conviences were added.

Jacob Culler's operated a very successful plantation on the North Fork of the Edisto River in the Limestone Community.  It grew to some 7000 acres He was a very successful cotton farmer and became quite prosperous.  In addition to cotton, the chief crop, he also farmed indigo, rice, and he operated his own gin.  His plantation included many field hands and skilled craftsmen -- blacksmiths, shoemakers, yarners, spinners, and weavers.  From 2 slaves in 1790, presumed inherited from his father, to several dozen slaves in later years including cooks, house servants, chambermaids, in addition to the workers.

During the Civil War, Jacon Culler's plantation had an encounter with Sherman's army in 1865.  The gin and stored cotton were burned and the house was vandalized by the troops.  Fortunately, his home was not burned and remained largely intact.

JACOB CULLER had sixteen children from his three marriages. Children of JACOB CULLER and REBEKAH JENNINGS are:

                   i.       JOHN JENNINGS5 CULLER, b. June 16, 1811; d. Abt. 1839.

11.  JAMES THOMAS5 CULLER (JOHN4, BENEDICT (BENJAMIN)3, BENEDICT CULLER2) was born September 21, 18171.  He married ELIZABETH SMOAK1.

Based on the 1860 census records, it is likely that James Thomas Culler married twice.  Whether Elizabeth is first, or second wife is not known by me.  The 1860 census houldhold included  a son named Henry. His age was recorded as 20 while James wife is recorded at age 32.  This is most likely not is mother.  Perhaps his mother died during or after Henry's birth.  Only 2 children were recorded in the household in the 1850 census. A small number for a farm family in those days.  This also gives credence to his first wife dying after Henry's birth.

12.  JOHN BENJAMIN5 CULLER (DAVID4, BENEDICT (BENJAMIN)3, BENEDICT CULLER2)11.  He married NANCY LANE1 1841 in Wilkesboro, NC1.

John Benjamin Culler was one of the few Culler's who did not stay in Orangeburg area. He migrated to Wilkesboro, NC 11  around 1840.  It is unknown what prompted him to relocate from the rest of his family.
