Generation No. 1

1.  GIDEON A.1 ALLEN was born April 22, 1804 in North Carolina, and died April 24, 1875 in Plain Dealing, Louisana.  He married MARY ANN HORN 1828 in Twiggs County, GA, daughter of JOAB HORN and NANCY DIXON.  She was born November 20, 1807 in Twiggs County, Georgia, and died January 19, 1899 in Plain Dealing, Louisana.

GIDEON ALLEN came to Twiggs County Georgia as a child in the early 1820's. His parentage is unknown except that they came from North Carolina. The Georgia Journal (Milledgeville) Newspaper, published a number of postings regarding letters left a the Marion Post Office for John Allen. I suspect this may be Gideon Allen's father. (click here to read more about this theory).  Letter's were left as early as July 1.1821.  Also letters recorded July 1, 1822; July 1, 1826.  This places the Allens in Twiggs County around Marion as early as 1821.  No Allen's are listed in the 1820 census, so it's likely they settled there between the time census was taken and July 1821.

GIDEON ALLEN was listed as a member of the Troop of Cavalry organized to be called on for Military Aid to protect the surveyers in Cherokee county.  Cherokee County was created by an legislative act on Dec. 26, 1832 from the Cherokee lands in north Georgia. The land was surveyed 6 years before the final deportation of the Indians and was formed into one large county called Cherokee. On April 10th, 1832 an election was held at the Marion court house to elect officers for the cavelry troop.  William Wimberly was elected as Captain and Reuben A. Nash, John R. Moore were elected as 1sy and 2nd Lieutenants respectively.  Henry Swearington was elected Ensign.  The other 61 men on the muster were privates.  Gideon Allen was listed 12th in the muster roll.

In 1844, GIDEON ALLEN and his family left Twiggs County and migrated to Bossier Parish Louisianna. This was during the time when most people in the Marion area vacated the county due to the railroad.  The ALLEN family was no exception and arrived in Bossier Parish in February of 1845.  The Bossier Citizens and Landmarks in The Bossier Banner, by Mrs Mollie Banks Gray wrote this account of his arrival to the area:

"He came to Bossier Parish in 1845 to bring Major Hamiter’s slaves; he lived on the Hamiter place until 1855.  He entered land where the house stood near Red Land from the government and bought more at intervals until he owned several thousand acres.  Supposedly, he acquired a good amount of property and money."

GIDEON ALLEN started purchasing property in the Red Land area of Bossier Parish for a number of years. Over time he acquired several thousand acres and a mill.  His residence was built in 1856 located in Red Land.

GIDEON ALLEN died at home on April 24, 1875. The Bossier Banner published his obituary on 29 April 1875, p. 3e,as follows:

"Died, at his residence, near Red Land, Bossier Parish, La., at 15 minutes past 8 o’clock P.M., on the 24th day of April, of Paralysis, GIDEON ALLEN; aged 71 years and 2 days."

In the  probate records in the Clerk of Court's Office, Bossier Parish Court, Benton, Louisiana, a petition is recorded dated 22 November 1875. The succession includes his widow, Mary Allen (nee Horn), a daughter, Elizabeth Allen, who had married John J. Scott, was deceased, leaving two daughters, Virginia P. and Lena H. Scott. John G. and Rufus H. Allen were surviving sons of Gideon Allen.  Other daughters living   at the time were  Matilda Allen (who was married to Martin Martins), Mary A. Allen (wife of A.J. Spurlin), Georgia Allen (wife of J.B. Bixbe, Jr.).  Property owned by Gideon Allen included a "considerable" amount of land, a Gin Stand and Grist Mill, livestock, etc.

 Generation No. 2

2.  JOHN G.2 ALLEN (GIDEON A.1)1 was born March 06, 1835 in Twiggs County, Georgia, and died September 27, 1906 in Plain Dealing, LA.  He married EMILY L. SPURLIN December 21, 1854 in Red Land, Louisiana, daughter of GREEN SPURLIN and MALINDA TRUITT.  She was born August 01, 1837 near Meridan, Mississippi, and died February 19, 1931 in Bossier Parish, Louisiana.

He was known as John G. Allen.   What did his middle initial represent,  Gideon or Green?   I've seen refernence to both.  The Masonic records his name as John Gideon Allen.  I've also seen John Green Allen probably after his presumed uncle, Green Allen.  Not sure which is correct, therefore I will refer to him with his middle initial G as he did in most signatures.

John G. Allen came with his parents to Louisiana in 1845 and settled with them in the Red Land community. He married EmiIy S. Spurlin on 21 December 1854 by a minister of the Gospel, Robert Martin in Bossier Parish, Louisiana according to the marriage license on record.

On April 6, 1862, John G. Allen  enlisted in the Confederate Army along with his brother Rufus H. Allen and was assigned to Company C, 6th Louisiana Cavalry.  He enlisted as a private and later was promoted to sergeant.  Family stories claimed he served with that unit at Chickamauga, 19-20 September 1863, however I have been unable to confirm whether that regiment actually was in that campaign. According to a veteran obituary published shortly after his death in the 1907 edition of "The Confederate Veteran" magazine, he went directly to Corinth Mississippi after enlisting and was promoted to second sergeant just after the battle at Denmark, Tennessee.  The 6th Louisiana Cavalry was attached to General Forrest's regiment during that time.  He served in this capacity until late 1864 when he was transferred to west of the Mississippi River and was promoted to first lieutenant in Company D, of the 1st Louisiana Cavalry until his surrender at Shreveport on May 25, 1865.

After the war, he served the public in several capacities as a county clerk and justice of the peace. On 11 July 1878, The Bossier Banner newpaper on p. 3c:,  John G. Allen was announced as a candidate for the House of Representatives from Bossier Parish, subject to nomination of the Democratic-Conservative Party.

He moved to Plain Dealing in the 1890’s.  An election held in Plain Dealing on Monday, 8 April 1902 for town officers to serve terms of two years, J.G. Allen was elected mayor.

A few years prior to his death, he went blind.  In his Confederate Pension Application submitted in 1898, he commented "...lost sight in the right eye due to glaucoma."

John G. Allen was a very active Mason in the Red Land Lodge from 1856 to 1891, when he demitted and went to Plain Dealing Lodge  (No. 237, F. and A.M) .until his death  He was a master mason and was reputedly the oldest Mason in the state before his death.   A committee of the lodge wrote a tribute titled  "In Memory of Brother J.G. Allen" that was entered into the minutes of the lodge (20 November 1906) and was published in the Bossier Banner on 10 January 1907.  Supposedly it was also published in Bossier Square and Compass.

Elizabeth died during childbirth of Gideon Allen Scott.  In the JJ Scott family bible, he noted she "departed this life suddenly in child birth."  The baby died a few months later from whooping cough, at an age of 3 months and 10 days.  Elizabeth was buried next to her mother, Mary Horn on July 22, 1865 in the Salem Cemetary, Plain Dealing, LA.

Elizabeth was very close to her parents.  She was listed in the as one of the beneficiaries listed in Gideon Allen's estate.  Unfortunately, she was not alive at the time of his death so it passed to her husband.  Family stories arose about the "proverbial yankee doctor she married who supposedly stole whatever fortune the Allens accumulated."  However most likely, the bulk of Gideon Allen's estate was sold to pay off debts leaving little to the beneficiaries.
