The First Sun Seen In Months In Northern Greenland As Seen Through Forward Scatter Tropospheric Antennae located on "P" Mountain.  These antennae are part of the DEWLine and are relay stations for the data going south.
We were there to support BMEWS?  The acronym stands for Ballistic Missile Early Warning System.  This was one of three sites at the time.  The others being in Clear, Alaska, and Fylingsdale, England.  They were placed there to protect the world from first attack by the Russians using ICBM Missiles with nuclear warheads.

It is a mysterious but beautiful part of our world.  Since I worked for the Thule Times, while there in 1961, I have a large collection of 8X10 professional black and white pictures.  I am going to share some of those with you to see if I can give you a feel for the place in the early 60s.

O.K.  Have I got your undivided attention now?  You may recognize Jayne Mansfield and her husband Mickey Hargitay (a professional weight lifter).  Jayne was at Thule with the Bob Hope Show.  If I have gotten your attention, I will show you the "girls" of Thule before I get into a different form of sight seeing for the area.

I did about everything on staff at Thule Times.  You can see an IBM compositing typewriter in front of me.  Everything was typed twice to determine spacing, editing, etc.  Our CE folks through together some pipes and the Fire Department came and sprayed it down with water.  The result?  A beautiful Christmas tree in front of the headquarters building.  The Thuleites are singing Christmas carols around the tree.
chapel.jpg (47709 bytes)   NOTE: Here are some interesting facts concerning the picture of the chapel under the ice. It was called the Ice Tunnel Chapel. It was located at the U.S. Army Polar Research and Development Center, Camp Tuto, Greenland. The chapel was put into use for the first time on May 27, 1962 when Chaplain (Captain) Joseph V. Coshan said mass for a small congregation. The tunnel was used for Army Research and Development projects under supervision of the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratories and the U.S. Army Engineering and Development Laboratories. This is arguably the most unique and interesting picture I have on this site.
